i am not writing these quetions to offend anyone, i am just seeking honest answers.
will you jehovah's witnesses help me in finding answers?
there is only 1 god.
Psalms 82:1 says:
God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment (Revised standard version)
So the bible itself says there are many gods.
coming at this as a householder rather than an ex-jw, i'd love to hear from any of you about comments from householders that made an impression on you, back when you were active in the door-to-door work.
since the jw's first knocked at my door 13 years ago, i've done my best to give them something to think about every time they knock at my door.
i always introduce myself by name and try to get their names.
Here are a selection of phrases I heard in my 20 plus years of door knocking:
What are you selling?
Why don't you get a proper job?
oh, Piss off!
You lot let children die, don't you?
You lot were here last week!
You're dressed like the prime minister!
If I buy your magazines you won't be back next week, will you?
oh, I've read all your books!
oh, Sod off!
etc etc...
i just heard that the norwegian watchtower apologist, rolf furuli, who esteems himself a biblical scholar of semetic languages, has completed the first of two volumes he plans to publish on the societys chronology, assyrian, babylonian, egyptian and persian chronology compared with the chronology of the bible.. title of this first volume is: persian chronology and the length of the babylonian exile of the jews.. i hear that although carl olof jonsson is not mentioned by name, or reference made to his book "gentile times reconsidered," it is nevertheless apparent that these volumes are an attempt to refute jonssons excellent study which has exposed the watchtowers 1914 date as total folly.. .
the book can be ordered now from furulis new personal website:.

Good post alleymom
The WT's 20 extra years can't be made to fit in anywhere. The evidence is absolutely overwhelming
Looking at the society's Daniel book on page 63 at a section titled "A warrior King builds an Empire" it states that 'Nebuchadnezzar thus ascended the throne of Babylon in the year 624 BCE.' The section states that this was immediately after he defeated Pharoah Necho at the battle of Carchemish and so the society have to date this battle at 625 BCE.
As a result the society are 20 years out with this date as well. Egyptian inscriptions and documents show that Pharoah Necho of the Saite Dynasty reigned from 610 - 595 BCE. So the battle of Carchemish must have been in 605 BCE not 625 BCE. It logically follows that Nebuchadnezzar's 18th regnal year was between 587 and 586 BCE.
AlanF - the term 'intellectual microbes' was spot on.

Scholar writes:
these scholars trivialize the date 607 which really differs from the Devil's dates of 587/586
what I do reject is the wholesale dogmatism surrounding 587/586 when it has no more proof than 607
I think what you are trying to say is that scholars and assyriologists choose the date 587/586 not because of a mountain of evidence but simply because they are in league with the devil.
I think that's possibly the worst line of reasoning you've ever come up with.
i've been talking to a few witnesses who were at the assembly this weekend, and apparently there were loads of apostates there!
any body from here go?
i was told about silent lambs, and some others who were giving out leaflets.
What's the attendance at this assembly these days??
Last one I went to in 1993 had about 17,000 on the Sunday afternoon.
does anyone else have trouble processing the logic behind the wts issue of universal sovreignty?
why empower satan to make claims and give him the time and circumstances to prove his claims?
why have a bet between 2 people decide the fate of the universe?
Nou says:
If you've so lost faith in God and anything spiritual
Why should a lack of belief in yahweh of the old testament equate with a lack of spirituality.
Spirituality is all about making yourself a better person. For Christians this may be by prayer and trying to apply some of Jesus' words in the gospels. For Buddhists there is meditation and many holy writings. For Hindus there is Yoga, Ayurveda and the Tirukaral and other writings. For Taoists there are the slow movements of Chi Gung, the Ba Duan Jin and the verses in the Tao Te Ching.
And the list goes on. Any of the above is a form of spirituality especially if it turns you into a better person.
For me too many so-called Christians that I've met (and I mean most JWs) are too busy trying to save themselves to actually become truly spiritual. The point I am trying to make when I post about contradictions in the bible is that reliance on doctrine is pointless. The bible can be interpreted any number of ways as can other holy writings. As an example look at all the different arguments surrounding the verses 'The father is greater than I am' and 'I and the father are one'.
The bible only has value when the good principles in it are applied. And the bible has good principles in it such as the fruitage of the spirit (Gal 5:22-23) but so do other holy writings. But the bible does have many errors and contradictions in it so should not be relied on as the only path to truth but simply a part of the picture. I choose not to believe in the yahweh of the old testament simply because this teaches fear rather than spirituality.
This does not mean I do not believe in God. I can neither prove he exists or disprove he exists. But you cannot say that a non belief in the old testament yahweh means a lack of spirituality.

if you could have dinner with any athlete, scientist, president, artist, or religious figure what would be your top 3 choices?.
ron
It would have to be -
1. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy
2. John Lennon
3. A dinner party with Keith Moon, Oliver Reed, John Bonham, Richard Harris and Richard Burton just to see if I'd survive the evening!

You're right berylblue, there are several scriptures that say the opposite of the two I mentioned. I wish god would make up his mind.

Deut 24:16 "The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor shall the children be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Ezek 18:20 "The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father"
So which is it to be. Do we suffer because of what Adam did or will Yahweh apply his own council above?
